The name of Tori Kagura is derived from the Ama-no-Iwato legend, a traditional art of the farmers in the Takachiho region of Miyazaki Prefecture. In the story Amaterasu-Omikami (the traditional Japanese sun goddess) hides herself in Ama-no-Iwato (meaning a “heavenly rock cave”) to escape the terrible treatment of Susano’o-no-Mikoto (her brother and god of the sea and storms). In order to lure her out, the other gods placed offerings in front of Ama-no-Iwato, and danced noisily outside. As soon as Amaterasu-Omikami opened the door of the Iwato and peeked outside, the strong gods grabbed her hands and pulled her out, and the world became brightly illuminated once again.
